Unix Engineer — Oracle Cloud@Customer, UNIX & Linux, automation at fleet scale
I am a Unix Engineer with Global Unix Platinum Support at Deutsche Bank AG. The work there is the operation and automation of an Oracle Cloud@Customer estate on the order of 1,300 ExaCC and ODA VMs — dedicated and autonomous databases alike — together with the gradual move of parts of that environment onto Google Cloud Platform. My focus is where manual work stops scaling at those numbers: patching, configuration, identities and recovery across the entire fleet.
I joined the bank in 2014 as a contractor and have been a permanent employee since 2018. Before that I worked as a freelance IT consultant from 1997, mostly for banks and large enterprises — I have been in IT since 1985.

- Oracle Cloud@Customer — Exadata Cloud@Customer, ODA, dedicated and autonomous databases
- Operating and patching UNIX/Linux estates in the four-figure VM range
- Hybrid cloud — connecting and migrating existing systems to Google Cloud Platform
- Automation of installation, patching, backup and recovery
- High availability, clustering and disaster recovery
- Kerberos and Active Directory integration, NFSv4, SSH identities across whole fleets
